Dean Applegate spent several years as Director of Music at Holy Rosary in the early 1980’s when Fr. Gerald Buckley was pastor, and was rehired in December of 1991 during the first term of Fr. Anthony Patalano. Until recently he was also the Director of Cantores in Ecclesia, a liturgical choir of children and adults he founded in 1984 to restore chant and sacred music to the Latin liturgy. The choir, now a non-profit corporation, is currently under the direction of his son, Blake Applegate, a member of the 11 o’clock schola and cantor at the 9 am Sunday Mass.
Internationally recognized as a leader in the promotion and preservation of Gregorian chant, Mr. Applegate has degrees from Linfield College, Colgate-Rochester Divinity School and the University of Oxford. His chant training was with Dr. Mary Berry at Newnham College, Cambridge, and Sr. Claudia Folz, SNJM, at Marylhurst. He has been married to Janine Applegate, Holy Rosary Director of Education, since 1968. In addition to their son they have a daughter, Jane, who also sings in the schola and manages the parish website.
